Heade, Martin Johnson

Grew up in Buck's County, Penn. In the 1840s he visited Europe, spending two years in Italy. Martin Johnson Heade's reputation burgeoned only in the last quarter of the twentieth century, when he came to be recognized as one of the most original American painters of his time.
