Kahlo, Frida 1907-1954
|
Kahlo, Frida BiographyMexican painter, born in Coyoacan near Mexico City, daughter of a German Jewish immigrant and a Mexican. In childhood Frida Kahlo suffered polio, which affected her right leg. At 18 she was gravely injured in a bus accident; from then on, throughout her life, she had frequent operations, was almost permanently in pain, often bedridden or in a wheelchair, and took drugs as well as drink. Recuperating in 1925 she began to paint.
Frida Kahlo had met Diego Rivera when he was painting a mural at her school; in 1929 she married him and though their married life swung between passion and conflict, divorcing and re-marrying, they remained emotionally dependent on each other.
By the late 1930s, Kahlo was part of the international art world, largely through the Surrealist interest in her work. Most of her oil paintings are portraits, many of them self-portraits accompanied by symbolic objects that speak of her loves and pains. Still Lifes too, often representing flowers and fruits, symbolize her joys and sufferings.
