Marquet, Albert BiographyFrench painter, one of the leading figures of the movement in French painting known as fauvism. Using the bold, simplified line patterns and violent colors characteristic of the fauvist style, Albert Marquet painted a wide variety of landscapes and Parisian scenes, chiefly the Seine River and its bridges.
Marquet went to Paris, France, in 1890 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He later met Henry Matisse, the undisputed leader of the fauvist movement, with whom Marquet often painted on the banks of the Seine. In his many oil paintings of towns, harbors, and rivers, Marquet showed a particular gift for simplification that seized unerringly upon the essentials in the scene before him. He later parted with the techniques of fauvism and developed a more conventional, naturalistic style.
