Snyders, Frans BiographyFlemish painter, born in Antwerp. One of his teachers was the Flemish painter Pieter Brueghel the Younger. After making his reputation as a painter of flower and fruit still lifes, Frans Snyders became a master of animal painting and did notable canvases of hunting scenes and animals in combat. Some of the best examples of these are The Bear Hunt (Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin), Fox Hunting (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna), and Stag Hunt (Mauritshuis, The Hague). Frans Snyders was employed to paint animals in large works by the Flemish artists Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens. One of Snyders's creations for Rubens is the ferocious eagle in the latter's Prometheus (1611-12, Philadelphia Museum of Art).
